Where it came from
Many Ghosts of Dr. Graves was a long-running supernatural anthology series published by Charlton Comics, beginning its run in 1967. Issue #56, released in 1977, arrived during a period when Charlton was capitalizing on the enduring popularity of gothic horror tropes. The series served as a vehicle for the mysterious Dr. Graves, a host character who introduced stories of hauntings and the macabre, reflecting the broader industry trend of horror-themed comics that proliferated following the relaxation of the Comics Code Authority guidelines.
The visual identity of this era of Charlton titles often featured a rotation of house artists and writers who prioritized atmospheric storytelling over the more mainstream, slick production styles of competitors. The design for this issue maintained the familiar aesthetic of the series, utilizing moody, high-contrast black and white interior art paired with vibrant, pulp-style covers. While the title was never a massive commercial juggernaut, it occupies a significant place in the history of independent horror comics, remembered today for its unique place in the pre-direct market distribution landscape.
