Where it came from
The Many Ghosts of Dr. Graves was a staple of the Charlton Comics horror line, debuting in 1967 during a period when the publisher sought to capitalize on the popularity of supernatural anthologies. Issue number 60, released in 1977, arrived as the series was reaching the end of its decade-long run, serving as a late example of the brand’s signature blend of macabre humor and eerie atmospheric storytelling hosted by the mysterious Dr. Graves.
The creative direction for this era was steered by longtime editor and writer Joe Gill, who frequently utilized a stable of reliable artists to maintain the title's gritty aesthetic. The series was designed to offer affordable, mass-market scares for newsstand readers, characterized by its reliance on twist endings and classic gothic tropes that mirrored the output of competitors like EC Comics, though constrained by the industry's self-censorship through the Comics Code Authority.
