Where it came from
Marvel Masterworks volume 22 was published in 1993, representing part of an ambitious archival project launched by Marvel Comics in 1987. The series was designed to collect the publisher's earliest and most iconic Silver Age stories in high-quality, hardcover formats, intended to preserve comic book history for a new generation of readers and serious collectors who valued the medium's foundational narratives.
This specific volume collects the early adventures of the Fantastic Four, continuing the series' mission to curate the output of legendary creators such as Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The design adhered to the uniform aesthetic established for the line, featuring iconic wraparound cover art, gold foil stamping, and introductory essays that provided historical context, ultimately earning praise for elevating comics from disposable newsprint entertainment to enduring literary artifacts.
