Where it came from
Master of Kung Fu #48, published by Marvel Comics in early 1977, arrived during the height of the 1970s martial arts craze in American pop culture. The series followed the adventures of Shang-Chi, the son of the villainous Fu Manchu, as he navigated a world of international espionage and moral conflict. This issue is notable for its creative team, featuring writing by Doug Moench and interior art by Paul Gulacy, a pairing frequently cited by historians and fans as the definitive era for the character.
Paul Gulacy’s approach to the title was heavily influenced by cinematic noir and the grit of 1970s spy thrillers, distinguishing it from the standard superhero fare of the time. By utilizing dynamic, cinematic page layouts and a somber, atmospheric tone, Gulacy and Moench transformed the book into a sophisticated, mature-leaning title. Upon its release, the run was critically acclaimed for its narrative depth and remains a sought-after example of experimental storytelling within the bronze age of comics.
