Where it came from
Master of Kung Fu #88 was published by Marvel Comics in 1980 during the peak of the series' critical acclaim. The title, which featured the martial artist Shang-Chi, was known for its departure from standard superhero tropes, favoring an espionage and globe-trotting narrative style influenced by the cinematic thrillers of the era. This particular issue remains a significant entry in the run due to the ongoing narrative evolution of the character as he continued his struggle against his father, Fu Manchu.
The creative team for this era of Master of Kung Fu is frequently celebrated for the synergy between writer Doug Moench and artist Paul Gulacy. Their collaboration is widely regarded as one of the most sophisticated pairings in 1970s and 80s comics, known for its cinematic panel layouts, stark shadows, and mature storytelling. The series is often cited by collectors as a high-water mark for Marvel's 'mature' Bronze Age output, valued for its consistent artistic quality and distinct atmospheric tension.
