Where it came from
Master of Kung Fu #80, published by Marvel Comics in 1979, belongs to a seminal period in the publisher’s history where martial arts cinema and pulp fiction sensibilities merged with traditional superhero storytelling. This issue was part of the long-running series featuring Shang-Chi, a character introduced during the height of the 1970s kung fu craze to capitalize on the popularity of Bruce Lee and the television series Kung Fu.
The issue features the creative work of writer Doug Moench and artist Paul Gulacy, a pairing highly regarded by comic historians for their cinematic, noir-inspired approach to the character. Gulacy’s dynamic, detailed pencils and innovative page layouts departed from the standard house style of the era, elevating the series into a sophisticated espionage thriller that was widely praised by critics and fans alike for its mature narrative tone and distinct visual identity.
