Masters of the Universe #2

Released in 1982, Masters of the Universe #2 was part of a promotional minicomic series bundled with the initial wave of Mattel action figures. Unlike standard monthly comic books, these were designed to function as narrative backstories for the toys, establishing the lore of Eternia and the central conflict between He-Man and Skeletor. The series served as a foundational marketing tool, effectively grounding the toy line in a recognizable fantasy-science fiction hybrid setting to engage children beyond simple play.

The illustrations for this early series were produced by artists such as Alfredo Alcala, whose gritty, detailed style helped define the aesthetic of the MOTU universe before the broader franchise expanded into film and television. While the storytelling was sparse and utilitarian, the work was well-received by the target demographic, successfully cementing the characters' roles in the minds of early collectors. These minicomics remain significant today as artifacts of 1980s toy marketing and the primary source material for the original mythos.
