Where it came from
Masters of the Universe #4 was published by DC Comics in 1982 as part of a three-issue limited series that expanded into a four-issue run due to the overwhelming popularity of the Mattel toy line. This comic served as a bridge between the initial mini-comics packaged with the action figures and the broader media landscape, providing an origin story for He-Man that solidified his role as a defender of Eternia against Skeletor.
The series featured the work of artist George Tuska and writer Paul Kupperberg, who aimed to establish a cohesive mythology for a property that was still finding its narrative identity. While the writing was designed to appeal to the younger demographic purchasing the figures, the dramatic, pulp-inspired art style helped ground the high-fantasy elements, ultimately helping to cement the franchise's presence in pop culture long before the debut of the animated television series.
