Where it came from
Masters of the Universe #1 was released by DC Comics in 1982 as a promotional one-shot to introduce audiences to the world of Eternia alongside the launch of the Mattel toy line. The comic served as a bridge between the plastic figures and the burgeoning lore of He-Man, establishing the central conflict between the heroic He-Man and the villainous Skeletor. It was created at a time when toy companies frequently utilized serialized media to drive interest in action figures, effectively anchoring the brand's narrative foundation before the arrival of the highly popular animated series.
The issue was written by Paul Kupperberg and featured artwork by Curt Swan and George Tuska, with a cover by Curt Swan. The team leaned into a classic superhero aesthetic, positioning He-Man as a barbarian hero caught in a cosmic struggle, reflecting the creative team's expertise in traditional DC fantasy tropes. The comic was well-received by the target demographic of young boys and served as a successful proof-of-concept for the commercial viability of multi-platform storytelling for toy franchises.
