Mister X #1

Mister X #1 was published in 1984 by Vortex Comics, emerging during a period of burgeoning interest in independent, creator-driven alternative comics. The series was conceptualized by Dean Motter, who sought to blend the aesthetic sensibilities of German Expressionism and Art Deco with a narrative centered on an insomniac architect trapped in the stylized, dystopian cityscape of Radiant City.

The initial visual identity of the series was heavily defined by the contributions of the Hernandez brothers, Jaime and Gilbert, and later Seth, who provided a distinct, angular artistic vision that matched the story's surrealist themes. The work was received as a stylistic milestone within the underground scene, noted for its unconventional layout and atmospheric, noir-inspired world-building that challenged mainstream superhero conventions of the time.
