Mister X #3

Mister X #3 was published in 1984 by Vortex Comics as part of the influential independent series created by Dean Motter. Emerging from the mid-1980s alternative comics scene, the series was celebrated for its striking noir-inflected aesthetic and surrealist narrative, which focused on the futuristic, architecture-obsessed city of Radiant City. The work was heavily influenced by German Expressionist cinema and the art deco movement, aiming to create a uniquely atmospheric graphic experience that stood apart from the dominant superhero genre of the time.

The visual design of the series, particularly in these early issues, was a collaborative effort often involving Motter, Jaime Hernandez, and other guest artists who pushed the boundaries of comic book layouts. Issue #3 continued to explore the title character’s insomnia and his struggle to navigate the psychological landscape of Radiant City. Upon its release, the series garnered significant critical acclaim for its sophisticated art direction and bold experimentation with color and shadow, cementing its status as a foundational pillar of the 1980s indie comics movement.
