Where it came from
Mister Zipangu, written and illustrated by Shinichi Hiromoto, was serialized in the monthly manga anthology Magazine Z beginning in 2001. The series is a creative reimagining of the classic Chinese epic Journey to the West, transported into a stylized, post-apocalyptic future. Hiromoto is well known for his distinct, gritty art style and energetic line work, which he utilized here to fuse traditional mythological archetypes with high-octane science fiction and punk aesthetics.
Issue number 2 continues the narrative following the introduction of the series' core cast, focusing on the journey of a modern-day Son Wukong through a crumbling landscape. The design of the volume reflects the editorial standards of Kodansha's Magazine Z, which targeted a mature demographic interested in experimental genre-bending stories. Upon its release, the series was received as a bold, visually striking departure from conventional takes on the source material, though it remains a niche title within Hiromoto's broader body of work.
