Mister X #5

Mister X number 5 was published in 1984 as part of the initial independent comic book run created by Dean Motter. Emerging from the vibrant, post-modern art scene of the early eighties, the series was conceived as a stylized, neo-noir architectural thriller set in the nightmarish, ever-changing city of Radiant City. The aesthetic was heavily influenced by German Expressionism and Art Deco, designed to reflect the protagonist's struggle with insomnia and the surreal urban landscape he inhabited.

The visual language of the series was a collaborative effort involving various prominent underground artists and creators, including the Hernandez brothers and Dave McKean, who were brought on to define the comic's distinct, jagged, and moody atmosphere. Upon its release, Mister X was lauded by critics and fellow creators for its experimental storytelling and sophisticated design, helping to pave the way for the creator-owned comics movement that would gain significant traction throughout the late 1980s.
