Where it came from
New X-Men #139 was released in 2003 as part of the climactic 'Planet X' storyline during Grant Morrison’s influential run on the series. Following the departure of artist Frank Quitely, Marc Silvestri took over interior art duties for this arc, bringing a darker, more cinematic aesthetic that aligned with the narrative's intense focus on Xorn's true identity and the impending destruction of the X-Mansion.
The issue is widely recognized for its pivotal role in the 'Planet X' narrative, where the facade of Xorn is shattered and the character is revealed to be Magneto. Morrison intended this plot point to radically challenge the status quo of the X-Men mythos, leading to significant debate among readers at the time regarding the characterization of both Xorn and Magneto. The design work by Silvestri captured the chaotic and high-stakes atmosphere of this revelation, solidifying the issue's place as a cornerstone of modern X-Men storytelling.
