Where it came from
New X-Men #142 was published in August 2003 as part of the landmark run written by Grant Morrison. This specific issue features the artwork of Phil Jimenez and serves as the concluding chapter of the Planet X story arc, which saw the mutant population and the X-Men's status quo drastically transformed under the influence of Xorn.
The issue is recognized for its intense narrative stakes and the controversial revelation regarding the identity of Magneto. Jimenez's visual storytelling was intended to capture the scope and chaos of a city-wide battle, reflecting Morrison's broader goal of dismantling and reimagining classic X-Men tropes for a modern 21st-century audience. Upon its release, the issue was widely discussed for its shocking plot developments and its role in bridging the gap toward the subsequent X-Men Reload initiative.
