Where it came from
New X-Men #149, released in early 2004, represents the penultimate chapter of Grant Morrison’s transformative run on the X-Men franchise. Published by Marvel Comics, the issue is part of the 'Planet X' story arc, which brought the series to a cataclysmic conclusion by revealing Xorn’s true identity and his devastating assault on Manhattan. This era is historically significant for its modernization of the X-Men's visual identity, moving away from traditional superhero costumes toward more grounded, leather-based tactical gear designed by Frank Quitely.
The interior artwork for this specific issue was provided by Marc Silvestri, a prominent artist known for his dynamic, highly detailed style that helped define the aesthetic of the 1990s. While Morrison’s writing challenged long-standing continuity, the visual transition in this issue helped bridge the gap between Morrison’s cerebral, avant-garde storytelling and the more action-oriented style that would characterize the subsequent 'Astonishing X-Men' run. It remains a key artifact for readers tracking the evolution of mutant narratives in the early 2000s.
