Where it came from
New X-Men #153, published in 2004, serves as the concluding chapter of Grant Morrison’s transformative 'Planet X' story arc. This issue represents the definitive end of the writer's acclaimed run on the title, which fundamentally redefined the X-Men mythos for the modern era by emphasizing the mutant species as a distinct biological entity and grounding the characters in a more contemporary, fashion-forward aesthetic.
The interior art for this issue was provided by Marc Silvestri, a prominent figure in 1990s comics who returned to the franchise to illustrate this high-stakes finale. Silvestri’s dynamic, detailed style sought to capture the visceral destruction of the Xavier Institute and the emotional fallout between the core cast members. The issue was received as a polarizing but significant closure to a period that significantly shifted the direction of the X-Men franchise, leaving the school and its students in a state of permanent upheaval.
