Where it came from
New X-Men #154, published in 2004, represents the final installment of Grant Morrison’s transformative run on the X-Men franchise. This issue serves as a quiet, reflective coda to the high-concept and often chaotic 'Planet X' arc, focusing on the immediate aftermath of the team's upheaval and the psychological toll taken on the remaining students at the Xavier Institute. It acted as a bridge, transitioning the title from Morrison’s radical reinvention back toward more traditional X-Men storytelling tropes.
The artwork for this issue was handled by Marc Silvestri, a prominent figure in the industry known for his clean, dynamic style and his foundational role at Image Comics. Silvestri was tasked with grounding the surreal narrative shifts left by the previous creative team, emphasizing human emotion and the architectural serenity of the school. While readers were often divided by the abrupt end of the preceding experimental storylines, the issue remains a significant piece of modern X-Men history for its role in closing a chapter that fundamentally altered the mutants' status quo.
