Where it came from
Nightwing #2, released in 1996, represents the second installment of the character’s first ongoing solo series following the success of his preceding miniseries. This title solidified Dick Grayson's transition from his long-standing identity as Robin to the mantle of Nightwing, anchoring him firmly in the gritty urban setting of Blüdhaven. The narrative was written by Dennis O'Neil, who sought to contrast Nightwing’s lighter, acrobatic history with the grim realities of his new patrol territory.
The interior artwork for this issue was illustrated by Greg Land, with cover art provided by Brian Stelfreeze. The series was designed to explore Grayson’s independence as a hero operating outside the shadow of Batman, focusing on themes of autonomy and personal accountability. It was received favorably by readers at the time, helping to establish the character as a viable lead for a standalone monthly publication within the broader DC Universe continuity.
