Where it came from
Nightwing #31, released in 2014 as part of DC Comics' The New 52 relaunch, serves as the concluding chapter of the 'Setting Son' story arc. Written by Kyle Higgins with artwork by Russell Dauterman, the issue centers on Dick Grayson's transition following the dissolution of the Secret Society and the public exposure of his identity, which necessitated the end of his career as Nightwing.
The issue is noted for its thematic weight and Dauterman’s clean, expressive linework. It functions as a pivotal bridge between the Nightwing solo title and the subsequent Grayson series, where the character abandons his traditional superhero persona to operate as a spy for the organization Spyral. It was received as a definitive turning point that allowed the creative team to explore Grayson’s identity outside the shadow of the Batman mantle.
