Otogi-Zōshi #1

Otogi-Zōshi was a television anime series produced by Production I.G that premiered in 2004. The series was designed as a dual-narrative historical fantasy, divided into two distinct arcs: the Heian period in Kyoto and a futuristic version of Tokyo. The creators intended to blend traditional Japanese folklore with modern science fiction themes, utilizing a stylistic, painterly aesthetic that diverged from typical contemporary animation of the time.

The first issue of the associated manga adaptation, serialized concurrently with the anime's production, serves to introduce the protagonist Minamoto no Hikaru and the supernatural turmoil of the Heian era. Designed to capture the moody, atmospheric tone of the animated series, the visual style prioritizes character archetypes and detailed period costumes. Upon release, it was noted primarily for its experimental structural approach and its attempt to modernize classic literature through the lens of a seinen demographic.
