Where it came from
Outre-Tombe was a French horror anthology comic series that emerged during the late 1960s, a period when the genre faced strict censorship laws in France. Published by Arédit/Artima, these pocket-sized digests provided a home for macabre stories that often utilized a blend of dark fantasy and psychological terror to circumvent the moral restrictions of the era. The series served as a bridge for readers seeking the visceral thrills of international horror comics, often reprinting or drawing heavy stylistic inspiration from American pre-Code classics.
The visual identity of issue #8 and its contemporaries was defined by a stark, atmospheric aesthetic characterized by high-contrast ink work and evocative cover illustrations intended to grab attention on newsstands. The creators, often working under pseudonyms or within anonymous production houses, prioritized eerie, shadow-drenched narratives that leaned into gothic tropes. While these comics were initially viewed as ephemeral pulp reading for youth, they have since been re-evaluated by collectors for their historical significance in the evolution of European underground horror comics.
