Phantom 2040 #4

Phantom 2040 #4 was published in 1995 as part of a tie-in comic series by Marvel Comics, coinciding with the debut of the animated television series of the same name. Set in the year 2040, the story reimagined Lee Falk’s classic hero, The Phantom, in a cyberpunk-inspired Metropia. The series was developed to capture the aesthetic of 90s animation, blending traditional hero tropes with high-tech, dystopian environmentalism.

The art and narrative approach sought to distance the character from his jungle-based origins, emphasizing a grittier, futuristic tone. The creative direction was intended to resonate with younger fans of the animated show while providing a deeper backstory for the titular character. While the comic was a niche product, it remains a notable example of mid-90s experimental franchise adaptations that attempted to modernize legacy intellectual properties through a science-fiction lens.
