Protectors #5

Protectors #5 was published by Malibu Comics in 1993 as part of the Protectors series, a cornerstone title of the publisher's Ultraverse imprint. The series was designed to showcase a gritty, high-stakes take on the superhero team dynamic, following the aftermath of the Godwheel crossover event. It emerged during a period of significant expansion for independent comic imprints attempting to challenge the industry dominance of major publishers by offering interconnected, mature narratives.

The creative direction for this issue was spearheaded by writer Gerard Jones, who sought to blend character-driven conflict with the broader cosmic scope that defined the Ultraverse line. Visual storytelling for the series was handled by a rotating team of artists known for the kinetic, detailed aesthetic typical of early 1990s comic illustration. Upon release, the series was received as a notable entry in the short-lived but ambitious Ultraverse catalog, praised for its attempt to maintain a cohesive continuity across multiple spin-off titles.
