Protectors #19

Protectors #19 was published by Malibu Comics in 1993 as part of their Protectors series, a cornerstone of the company’s Ultraverse line. This series reimagined classic Golden Age characters—originally published by Centaur Publications in the 1940s—within a gritty, modern narrative framework typical of the early 1990s comic book industry. The intent was to revitalize forgotten intellectual properties for a contemporary audience that favored darker, more complex character dynamics.

The series was part of a larger editorial effort to bridge the gap between historical comic legacy and the rising popularity of shared universe superhero storytelling. While the series was noted for its attempt to integrate mid-century archetypes into a new continuity, it faced the intense market competition of the era. Its design and visual tone were heavily influenced by the prevailing aesthetics of the time, characterized by bold, action-oriented layouts and the distinct art styles prominent among Malibu’s roster of freelance illustrators.
