Qīlóngzhū #17

Qīlóngzhū issue 17, released in 1985 as part of the serialized run in Weekly Shōnen Jump, marks a significant turning point in Akira Toriyama’s seminal manga series. By this stage in the publication, the narrative had begun its transition from a loose, gag-based adventure inspired by Journey to the West into the high-stakes, martial arts-focused tournament style that would eventually define the franchise. This transition was driven by Toriyama’s desire to maintain reader engagement through rhythmic combat sequences and a tighter progression of training and growth.

The aesthetic of this period reflects Toriyama’s mastery of dynamic paneling and expressive character design, which balanced humor with emerging action sensibilities. As the seventeenth chapter of the original run, it contributed to the early establishment of the manga's visual language—clean lines, kinetic energy, and a focus on character silhouette. The series received widespread critical reception upon its release, setting the stage for what would become one of the most influential and widely translated manga properties in global history.
