Where it came from
Qīlóngzhū, widely known internationally as Dragon Ball, debuted in 1984 under the creative direction of Akira Toriyama. Published in Weekly Shōnen Jump, the series evolved from a loose adaptation of the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West into a seminal martial arts adventure. Issue number 40 occupies a distinct space in the early narrative, appearing during the era of the initial Dragon Ball search and the introduction of characters who would define the franchise's comedic and action-oriented tone.
The aesthetic of this period showcases Toriyama’s signature blend of fluid, expressive character designs and clear, kinetic panel composition. As one of the early chapters in the serialization, this issue reflects the manga's transition from purely episodic gag humor to a more structured long-form narrative. It was well-received by readers at the time, helping to establish the momentum required for the series to become one of the best-selling manga titles in history.
