Where it came from
Qīlóngzhū, known internationally as Dragon Ball, began its serialized run in Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1984, created by Akira Toriyama. Issue 4 represents the early chapters of the series, a period marked by Toriyama's shift from his previous comedic works toward a narrative blend of martial arts, adventure, and the whimsical influence of the Chinese classic Journey to the West. The series was developed during a golden era of manga, where Toriyama's character design and dynamic paneling quickly distinguished the title from its contemporaries.
The early chapters of the manga were designed to establish the core dynamic between Son Goku and Bulma as they embark on their quest for the Dragon Balls. Toriyama aimed for a lighthearted tone, emphasizing gag humor and exploration, which contrasted with the high-stakes combat that would come to define later arcs. Upon its initial publication, the series was received with enthusiasm by Japanese readers, effectively securing its place as a cornerstone of modern shōnen manga and laying the foundation for the massive global franchise that followed.
