Where it came from
Qīlóngzhū, widely known internationally as Dragon Ball, debuted as a serialized manga in Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1984. Created by Akira Toriyama, the series was inspired by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, blended with Toriyama's love for Hong Kong martial arts cinema. Issue #6, falling within the early chapters of the series, captures the lighthearted adventure-comedy tone that preceded the franchise's shift toward more intense, action-oriented narratives.
Toriyama’s design philosophy for the series emphasized expressive, kinetic character work and clear, readable action sequences. As a young mangaka, Toriyama sought to create a story that felt both fantastical and grounded in rhythmic physical comedy. While the early volumes were received with modest interest, the series eventually grew into a global cultural phenomenon, securing Toriyama’s legacy as one of the most influential figures in the history of the medium.
