Qīlóngzhū #7

Qīlóngzhū, known internationally as Dragon Ball, began serialization in the Japanese manga anthology Weekly Shonen Jump in 1984. Written and illustrated by Akira Toriyama, the series was initially inspired by classic adventure motifs, specifically the 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West, mixed with contemporary Hong Kong action cinema. Issue number 7 represents a pivotal moment in the early narrative, as the protagonist Son Goku continues his quest to collect the seven mystical Dragon Balls, facing increasingly complex martial arts challenges.

Toriyama’s design philosophy for the early volumes focused on a blend of whimsical character caricatures and dynamic, kinetic panel layouts that prioritized readability and comedic timing. Upon its initial publication, the seventh installment contributed to the series' rapid growth in popularity within Japan, cementing Toriyama's reputation as a master of character design and narrative pacing. The success of these early chapters set the foundation for the series to evolve from a lighthearted adventure into the global phenomenon that defined the shonen manga genre for decades.
