Return of the Living Dead: Untold Tales of the Tarman #1

Released in 2007 by Dead Dog Comics, this one-shot comic serves as a prequel to the iconic 1985 horror-comedy film Return of the Living Dead. The narrative explores the dark origins of the Tarman, the film's most memorable antagonist, detailing the chemical accident that led to the creature's creation. By expanding the lore of the Dan O'Bannon universe, the book was intended to satisfy long-time fans who had waited decades for more backstory regarding the specific experiments at the Darrow Chemical Company.

The comic was illustrated by Jeff Zornow, an artist well-regarded in the horror comic genre for his visceral, high-contrast style that honors the aesthetic of classic 1980s slasher cinema. The creative team aimed to capture the gritty, tongue-in-cheek tone of the original movie while providing a somber, grounded origin for the Tarman. Upon its release, the issue was received as a niche but effective piece of tie-in media that successfully translated the film's practical effects look into a printed format.
