Rising Stars #22

Rising Stars #22, published in 2004, represents the penultimate chapter of the influential superhero deconstruction series created by writer J. Michael Straczynski. The series emerged from Top Cow Productions at a time when the comic book industry was beginning to embrace long-form, character-driven narratives that interrogated the moral and political consequences of super-powered individuals existing within a realistic human society.

The issue features artwork by artist Christian Zanier, who took over visual duties during the latter half of the series. The aesthetic direction of the title throughout its run favored a grounded, cinematic realism designed to emphasize the internal conflicts of the 'Specials.' Like the preceding issues, the artwork was received as a functional vessel for Straczynski’s heavy narrative themes, focusing on the inevitable resolution of the geopolitical tensions that defined the series' central premise.
