Where it came from
Secret Origins Annual #2 was published by DC Comics in 1988, serving as part of a series dedicated to re-establishing the backstories of various characters following the publisher's continuity-resetting event, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This specific issue is notable for focusing on the origin of the Doom Patrol, a team of outcasts whose history was reimagined for the modern era of the late 1980s.
The issue featured the writing of Grant Morrison, who was just beginning to establish his idiosyncratic and experimental approach to the superhero genre. With art provided by Erik Larsen and others, the creative team sought to ground the surreal, bizarre nature of the Doom Patrol in a more human, psychological context, which ultimately helped define the team's identity for the decade to follow and set the stage for Morrison’s acclaimed subsequent run on the monthly title.
