Where it came from
Secret Origins #48 was published by DC Comics in 1990 as part of a long-running anthology series designed to provide definitive, modernized backstories for various characters within the DC Universe. This specific issue is notable for focusing on the Golden Age character The Flash, specifically Jay Garrick, bridging the gap between the character's 1940s origins and his contemporary role in the post-Crisis DC continuity.
The issue features work by writers like Grant Morrison and artists such as Ty Templeton, who aimed to synthesize the character's legacy with a sense of historical reverence. The creative team focused on establishing a firm narrative foundation for the Flash legacy, and the issue was generally well-received by readers for its efforts to reconcile disparate threads of comic book history while maintaining the adventurous spirit of the Golden Age.
