Where it came from
Sentenced to Be a Hero: The Prison Records of Penal Hero Unit 9004 is a Japanese light novel series written by Rocket Shokai and illustrated by Mephisto. The story belongs to the fantasy genre, specifically focusing on subverting common tropes by exploring the aftermath of a hero's victory. It originated as a web novel on the platform Kakuyomu before being picked up for print publication by Kadokawa Shoten in 2021.
The narrative follows the protagonist, Zeir, who is branded a criminal after saving the world, leading to his imprisonment alongside other former heroes in a penal unit. The design and character illustrations by Mephisto emphasize the grim, institutional atmosphere of the prison setting, contrasting it with the high-fantasy backgrounds of the characters' pasts. The series has been received as a character-driven examination of justice and redemption, eventually leading to its adaptation into a manga series.
