Sentry #1

Sentry #1 was published by Marvel Comics in 2000 as the debut of a five-issue limited series. Created by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee, the project was famously marketed through a clever, fabricated history that suggested the character was a long-lost creation of Stan Lee from the early 1960s. This meta-narrative successfully leaned into the nostalgia of the Silver Age, presenting the Sentry as an forgotten hero who had been erased from the memories of the Marvel Universe and its readers.

The character's design was purposefully grounded in a classic aesthetic, featuring a simple, bold costume and a cape, mirroring the archetypal Golden Age super-hero. Jae Lee’s artistic contribution leaned into a somber, psychological tone that contrasted with the bright, classic costume, reflecting the internal struggle and existential weight characterizing the protagonist. Upon its release, the series was received with considerable critical intrigue, both for its unique publishing marketing strategy and its complex deconstruction of the superhero mythos.
