Where it came from
Groo the Wanderer #7, published by Marvel Comics under the Epic Comics imprint in 1985, continues the adventures of the dim-witted but dangerous mercenary created by Sergio Aragonés. Developed alongside longtime collaborator Mark Evanier, the series emerged from Aragonés's desire to lampoon the tropes of sword-and-sorcery fiction and epic fantasy, which were enjoying a significant resurgence in pop culture during the early 1980s.
The design of the issue reflects Aragonés’s signature kinetic, wordless-style storytelling adapted into a dialogue-heavy comic format. Aragonés provided the character designs and layouts, emphasizing expressive, slapstick character movements that contrast sharply with the grim tone of typical fantasy literature. The series was well-received by fans and critics for its consistent humor and the distinct charm of Aragonés’s ink work, securing its place as a cult classic in the medium of satirical comics.
