Shàngbān Zújīn Tàiláng #22

Shàngbān Zújīn Tàiláng, known internationally as Salaryman Kintaro, was created by manga artist Hiroshi Motomiya and began serialization in the seinen magazine Weekly Young Jump in 1994. The series follows the journey of Kintaro Yajima, a former biker gang leader who pivots to a corporate career after a life-altering event, serving as a reflection of the socio-economic shifts in Japan during the late 20th century. Issue #22 belongs to the foundational period of this series, capturing the gritty yet aspirational narrative style that established Motomiya as a significant voice in workplace-themed manga.

The design of the series centers on the juxtaposition between Kintaro's rebellious past and the rigid expectations of the Japanese corporate salaryman lifestyle. Motomiya utilized a bold, cinematic art style that emphasized character intensity, which proved highly effective in humanizing the complexities of business bureaucracy. The series was well-received for its idealistic take on meritocracy and persistence, eventually spawning multiple anime and live-action adaptations that solidified its status as a cultural touchstone for the professional anxieties of the era.
