Where it came from
Shangri-La Frontier #23 is part of the ongoing manga series written by Katarina and illustrated by Ryosuke Fuji, which began serialization in Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine in 2020. The narrative originated from a popular web novel, transitioning into a visually dynamic manga format that captures the frenetic energy of competitive gaming and virtual reality exploration. This specific volume contributes to the series' overarching focus on the protagonist, Sunraku, as he navigates the complexities of an immersive, bug-riddled masterpiece game.
The series design aesthetic reflects a blend of traditional fantasy tropes and modern gaming culture, heavily influenced by the high-octane action style of Ryosuke Fuji. Upon its release, the series garnered attention for its unique premise of a gamer who intentionally plays low-quality games to refine his skills, which served as a refreshing entry in the burgeoning litRPG and isekai-adjacent manga market. The publication of volume 23 represents the continued success of the property, which has been well-received by readers for its intricate mechanical world-building and character design.
