Where it came from
Souten no Ken, or Fist of the Blue Sky, serves as a prequel to the legendary manga series Fist of the North Star. Authored by Tetsuo Hara with scenario supervision by Buronson, the series began serialization in Weekly Comic Bunch in 2001. Volume 3 continues the narrative of Kenshiro Kasumi, the 62nd successor of the Hokuto Shinken style, as he navigates the criminal underworld of 1930s Shanghai.
The design of the series leans into a noir-inspired aesthetic, utilizing Hara's signature hyper-muscular character models while integrating a gritty, historical atmosphere distinct from the post-apocalyptic setting of his previous work. Volume 3 was received as a continuation of the franchise's brutal martial arts legacy, maintaining the dark tone and complex power dynamics that established the series as a significant entry in the seinen demographic during the early 2000s.
