Souten no Ken, or Fist of the Blue Sky, launched in 2001 as a prequel to the iconic manga Fist of the North Star. Created by Tetsuo Hara with writing assistance from Buronson, the series shifts the setting to 1930s Shanghai. It follows Kenshiro Kasumi, the 62nd successor of the Hokuto Shinken fighting style, navigating the criminal underworld and geopolitical instability of the era. The manga was serialized in Weekly Comic Bunch, marking a return to the gritty, hyper-masculine aesthetic that defined Hara’s original work.

The design of the first issue reflects Hara’s signature anatomical intensity and dramatic ink work, focusing on a more mature and world-weary protagonist compared to the younger Kenshiro of the original series. The reception was largely driven by the nostalgia of long-time fans of the Hokuto Shinken universe, who appreciated the expansion of the franchise’s lore and the detailed period-accurate depiction of Shanghai’s landscape.
