Where it came from
Space Family Robinson, published by Gold Key Comics, debuted in 1962 as a science fiction adventure series mirroring the 'Swiss Family Robinson' premise set in outer space. Issue number 18, released in 1965, arrived during the height of the Space Age, a period when American popular culture was deeply invested in cosmic exploration and futuristic family dynamics. The series was created by Dan Spiegle, who provided the foundational visual aesthetic, and writer Gaylord DuBois, who focused on themes of survival and ingenuity.
The design of the series was characterized by Gold Key's distinct house style, often featuring painted covers that offered a more polished, cinematic feel compared to the typical newsstand comics of the era. Issue 18 reflects the ongoing narrative tension of the Robinsons navigating the perils of deep space while maintaining a cohesive family unit. The title gained historical significance due to a legal dispute with Irwin Allen, the producer of 'Lost in Space,' which featured a remarkably similar premise, ultimately leading to Gold Key’s acquisition of the 'Lost in Space' license.
