Where it came from
Space Riders: Vortex of Darkness #4 is the concluding chapter of the second miniseries in the psychedelic science fiction saga created by writer Fabian Rangel Jr. and artist Alexis Ziritt. Published by Black Mask Studios, this series serves as a continuation of the Space Riders mythos, blending heavy metal aesthetics with vibrant, retro-futuristic pulp sensibilities. The project emerged from a desire to push the boundaries of traditional comic book visual storytelling, heavily influenced by 1970s and 80s cosmic horror and garage rock culture.
The aesthetic of the series is defined by Alexis Ziritt’s distinct, high-contrast color palettes and chaotic, kinetic layouts. When released, the series was well-regarded for its stylistic risks and its commitment to a lo-fi, independent ethos that stood in stark contrast to the dominant house styles of major publishers. The series was designed as a self-contained, hallucinatory journey, aiming to capture the frenetic energy of independent comics while maintaining a coherent narrative arc centered on the adventurous and embattled crew of the skull-shaped spaceship, the Santa Muerte.
