Spider-Woman #27

Spider-Woman number 27, released in 1980, is a notable entry in the original Jessica Drew series that ran from 1978 to 1983. This period of the series was marked by a shift in tone as the creative teams sought to distance the character from her origin as a Hydra agent and solidify her role as a private investigator in San Francisco. The cover art and interior narrative reflect the era's focus on grounded, moody storytelling within the broader Marvel Universe.

The issue features work by writer Michael Fleisher and artist Steve Leialoha. Leialoha’s distinct, illustrative style during this run helped define the character's aesthetic, emphasizing a more noir-inspired visual language that matched her transition into investigative work. While the series often struggled to find a long-term audience compared to Marvel's primary titles, this specific era is frequently cited by collectors for its idiosyncratic atmosphere and the development of supporting characters who provided a sense of continuity in Jessica Drew's life.
