Where it came from
Released in 1995 as part of the six-issue Dark Empire II limited series, this comic was published by Dark Horse Comics during their tenure holding the Star Wars license. The series served as a direct sequel to Tom Veitch and Cam Kennedy’s landmark Dark Empire, continuing the narrative of Luke Skywalker’s temporary fall to the dark side and the return of a resurrected Emperor Palpatine. It was developed during a pivotal era for the franchise, predating the prequel trilogy and helping to solidify the narrative framework of the Expanded Universe.
The visual identity of the issue is defined by Cam Kennedy’s distinctive, painterly watercolor aesthetic, which moved away from the traditional inked and colored comic style of the period to create a gritty, ethereal atmosphere. Written by Tom Veitch, the series was designed to explore the psychological toll of the Force on Jedi protagonists. While the series received mixed reactions from fans regarding the premise of the Emperor's survival, it was widely praised for its unique artistic direction and remains a significant artifact of 1990s comic book storytelling.
