Star Wars: Dark Empire II #5

Released in 1995 as part of the six-issue limited series Dark Empire II, this comic was published by Dark Horse Comics during a pivotal era for the Star Wars expanded universe. Following the success of the original Dark Empire miniseries, which explored the return of the Emperor in a clone body, this sequel continued the narrative arc involving Luke Skywalker's temporary fall to the dark side and his subsequent redemption. The series was designed to bridge gaps in the post-Return of the Jedi timeline, serving as a primary pillar of the lore during the mid-nineties.

The creative team featured writer Tom Veitch and artist Cam Kennedy, whose signature painted-watercolor style became the aesthetic hallmark of the Dark Empire saga. Kennedy’s approach sought to capture a gritty, surreal atmosphere that departed from traditional comic book coloring, aiming for a more cinematic and ethereal look. While the series received mixed reviews regarding its complex plot and dark tone, it is widely recognized by collectors for its significant impact on shaping the Expanded Universe's overarching continuity for years to come.
