Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire - Kenner Special #1

Released in 1996 by Dark Horse Comics, this special issue served as a promotional companion to Lucasfilm’s ambitious Shadows of the Empire multimedia project. The initiative was designed to bridge the gap between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, utilizing a novel, a video game, and a comic series to expand the Star Wars universe during a period when no new films were in production. This particular comic was distributed through a partnership with Kenner, the legendary toy manufacturer, to showcase their new line of action figures based on the project's original characters.

The interior art and narrative were crafted to align with the visual aesthetic established for the multimedia event, focusing on characters like Prince Xizor and Dash Rendar. As a promotional vehicle, the issue was intended to generate excitement among collectors and children alike, effectively acting as a bridge between the printed page and the physical toy aisles. While not part of the primary Dark Horse miniseries run, it remains a notable example of the cross-promotional marketing strategies employed by Lucasfilm in the mid-1990s to maintain the vitality of the Star Wars brand.
