Star Wars Tales #1

Star Wars Tales #1 was released in 1999 as the inaugural issue of Dark Horse Comics' anthology series dedicated to exploring the Star Wars universe outside of the core cinematic narratives. The series was designed to provide a home for shorter, experimental stories that occupied the gaps in the Expanded Universe, allowing creators to explore diverse genres ranging from comedy to tragedy. This debut issue helped establish the tone for the anthology, prioritizing creative freedom and artistic variety over rigid adherence to a single chronological timeline.

The issue features work from notable industry figures such as Jan Strnad and Randy Stradley, alongside art from artists like Kilian Plunkett. The design and editorial direction sought to move away from the epic scope of mainline Star Wars titles, instead focusing on intimate character moments and whimsical side stories. Upon its release, the anthology was generally well-received by fans of the Expanded Universe for its willingness to take stylistic risks and its inclusion of lighthearted content that contrasted with the more serious, ongoing plotlines of the era.
