Where it came from
The Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire - Kenner Special #2 was released by Dark Horse Comics in 1996 as part of a multimedia initiative designed to bridge the narrative gap between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. This specific issue served as a promotional piece, highlighting the extensive line of action figures and vehicles Kenner developed to support the Shadows of the Empire project, which Lucasfilm marketed as a film without a movie.
The publication was illustrated in a style consistent with the broader Dark Horse Star Wars aesthetic of the mid-1990s, blending promotional toy photography with sequential storytelling. Designed to appeal to both comic enthusiasts and toy collectors, the issue utilized the high-action tone of the multimedia event to showcase the depth of the new character Dash Rendar and his supporting cast, ultimately receiving interest primarily from completionists of the era's expansive Star Wars literature.
