Strikeforce: Morituri #31

Strikeforce: Morituri was launched by Marvel Comics in 1986, created by writer Peter B. Gillis and artist Brent Anderson. The series occupied a unique niche in science fiction comics, centered on a group of volunteers who gain superhuman powers to defend Earth against an alien invasion, knowing that the experimental process used to grant them these abilities will inevitably kill them within a year. It was a provocative exploration of mortality and heroism that subverted traditional superhero tropes by focusing on the finite lives of its protagonists.

Issue #31, published in 1989, stands as the final installment of the series. By this stage in the run, the title had navigated various creative shifts following the departure of the original team, but it maintained its thematic commitment to the tragic destiny of the Morituri recruits. The artwork in these concluding chapters continued the series' gritty aesthetic, reflecting a narrative that prioritized character development and existential stakes over the more conventional escapism found in other superhero books of the late 1980s.
